Ellie Jane Goulding was born in Hereford England on December 30 1986. Her mother Tracey Goulding Summers worked in an ice cream shop and the father Arthur Goulding was a member of an undertaker family. Goulding's older sister Isabel and her younger sister Jordan have siblings. Alex is her brother. Alex Goulding's older brother performs bass. Also, he is an Hereford musician. When she was young she was surrounded by her mom who inspired her to become a musician. She began to learn the clarinet at age nine. She began writing her own songs at the age of 14, but it wasn't until after she was in university that she began to seriously pursue the art of songwriting.
